Eligible graduates of Ann Arbor Public Schools will receive guaranteed admission to Eastern Michigan University, as well as a more streamlined admissions process.
Eastern Michigan University and Ann Arbor Public Schools have formed a partnership that will help remove barriers to higher education for eligible students through a direct admission program and a more streamlined admissions process. The partnership is intended to make a college education more accessible to more students by removing the barriers that can come along with a traditional admissions process.
According to an article on Eastern Michigan University’s website, Dr. LaJoyce Brown, who serves as the director of admissions at the university, was quoted as saying of the partnership, “This Direct Admission partnership with Ann Arbor Public Schools proves Eastern’s commitment to the innovation of college access, opportunities and student success. Through this partnership, we are creating a clear pathway to EMU by collaborating with neighboring educators to support students as they begin their postsecondary journey as Eagles.”
The new direct-admission partnership will see high school seniors from Ann Arbor Public Schools with a grade point average of 2.5 or above receiving direct-admission invitations to Eastern Michigan University. If the student accepts the invitation, they will be automatically enrolled at the university with all enrollment fees waived. They will also be considered for merit-based scholarships.
Brendan Kelly, the university’s president, said, “Eastern Michigan University is proud to stand with Ann Arbor Public Schools in opening wider doors to higher education. This partnership reflects our belief that talent is everywhere, and opportunity should be too. By simplifying the path to college, we’re sending a clear message to students across Ann Arbor: your future is within reach, and EMU is ready to walk alongside you as you take your next steps.”
Katie Condon, the university’s vice president of enrollment management, explained, “As a regional public university, EMU is committed to serving our neighboring communities and expanding opportunity for students across Ann Arbor Public Schools. Direct admission sends a message to students and families that higher education is within reach and that EMU is ready to support their success.”
The partnership also includes support for Ann Arbor Public Schools students and families in the form of information sessions, meetings with academic counselors, and collaboration between the district’s schools and the university.
Ann Arbor Public Schools’ Superintendent Jazz Parks said, “The Ann Arbor Public Schools is excited to enter into this new partnership with Eastern Michigan University, which will guarantee admission to EMU for eligible graduating seniors. We know the college application process can be challenging for students and families, and we are happy to partner with EMU to offer a simple, straightforward way for our graduates to continue with their education.”
