The grants were awarded to college faculty members to develop Open Educational Resources to help students save money on textbook costs.
Faculty members from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College have received grants from the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana’s PALSave Textbook Creation Grants initiative. These grants will allow the faculty members to develop Open Educational Resources, which are essentially free online textbooks, for their courses, in order to help students save money on textbook and course materials costs.
According to an article on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s website, Amanda Hurford, who serves as the PALNI scholarly communications director and PALSave program lead, was quoted as saying of the grants, “PALSave Textbook Creation Grants support our mission to expand open educational resources (OER) and reduce costs for students. With the support of PALNI libraries, through engagement, project guidance and publishing services, these faculty authors are creating high-quality, accessible textbooks that help students succeed and advance a culture of open education across Indiana and beyond.”
The grants were awarded to faculty members working on two Open Educational Resource projects in two overlapping cohorts. Each author on the projects will receive up to $6,500 thanks to funding from Lilly Endowment.
The first project, “The Psychology of Leadership in a Global Context,” is being developed by Lorrie L. Dyer, Ph.D., an adjunct faculty in SMWC’s Department of Business and Leadership Studies; Hubbard, Ph.D., an assistant professor and director of SMWC’s Master’s Programs in Business and Leadership; Kourtney Barrett, ’25Ph.D., an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Business and Leadership Studies; Jennifer F. Smith, Ph.D., LCPC; and Trisha Purdue, MS.
The second project is “Music Therapy in Practice: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Clinical Process,” which is being developed by Krista Cole-Furstenber, a lecturer in SMWC’s Department of Arts, Letters, & Music, and Amy Foley, who is an associate professor of music therapy and director of Music Therapy and Student Support at the University of Indianapolis.
