The scholarship will support students who are Keyser High School alumni.
The James and Anita H. Mahood Scholarship has been established at Potomac State College of West Virginia University to support students who are graduates of Keyser High School. The scholarship was officially established in March 2026 by James Mahood, who graduated from Potomac State College in 1961, and his wife, Anita.
According to an article on Potomac State College’s website, Dr. Megan J. Webb, who serves as Potomac State College’s Director of Development, was quoted as saying of the scholarship establishment, “We are incredibly grateful to Jim Mahood for his generous support in establishing the James and Anita H. Mahood Family Scholarship. As a proud alumnus, Jim understands firsthand the impact of educational support—and is now paying it forward to help students from Mineral County achieve their dreams.”
James Mahood graduated from Potomac State College in 1961 before joining the military. He continued his education, first at Naval Post Graduate School and then at George Washington University, but he shared that his heart remains with Potomac State College.
Mahood said, “Giving back to a student means a great deal to me, because I once benefited from that same kind of support. I’m delighted to help students from my home county of Mineral County pursue their education and their future.”
In order to be eligible for the James and Anita H. Mahood Scholarship, students must have a 2.5 grade point average. First preference for the scholarship award will be given to students or graduates of Keyser High School, and second preference will be for students from Mineral County, West Virginia. The college’s Office of Financial Aid will determine the recipients.
