University of Evansville expands free tuition to more students

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, eligible Indiana residents will have their tuition covered entirely by the school, as well as will receive additional money to cover other educational expenses.

University of Evansville is expanding its full tuition coverage to more students, expanding access to higher education in the state. Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, eligible Indiana residents and all 21st Century Scholar students will have their undergraduate tuition and fees fully covered by the university, and they will receive an additional amount to help cover other educational expenses. The enhanced financial aid is a step toward making a university education more affordable for Indiana residents.

According to an article on the University of Evansville’s website, Dr. Jill Griffin, who serves as the university’s Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing, was quoted as saying of the change, "Students from all walks of life attend UE. With our generous scholarships and financial aid, some students actually pay less to attend UE than they would at a public university. We believe financial circumstances should never limit the size of a student's dreams or the opportunity to pursue them."

Incoming freshmen in the Fall 2027 semester who are 21st Century Scholars or who are eligible Indiana residents who come from families making less than $60,000 per year will have all of their undergraduate tuition and fees covered by the University of Evansville. These students will also receive an additional $2,500 per year to put toward other educational expenses not covered through this initiative.

Students who demonstrate the greatest financial need and strong academic backgrounds may instead qualify for an additional $15,000 annually in addition to the free tuition and fees. This funding can be used for on-campus housing and meal plans.

In the 2026 academic year, the University of Evansville is providing students with $27 million in scholarships and grants. Almost every undergraduate student is receiving some type of scholarship or financial assistance from the university. This comes at a time when, according to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, rates of college attendance have fallen statewide from 65% in 2014 to 52% in 2024. The University of Evansville aims to make college more accessible to more Indiana residents.
