University of Akron expands Making Akron Possible grant

The university’s Making Akron Possible grant is a last-dollar financial award, which covers any remaining tuition for eligible students after their other scholarships and financial aid have been applied.

University of Akron is expanding its Making Akron Possible (MAP) grant for the upcoming Fall 2027 semester. The grant will now be available to eligible Ohio residents and will serve as a last-dollar financial award that will cover the student’s tuition after all other scholarships, grants, and financial aid have been applied. The expansion is intended to remove financial barriers to education for Ohio residents and ensure access to undergraduate education.

According to an article on University of Akron’s website, university president R.J. Nemer was quoted as saying of the expansion to the program, "The University of Akron proudly leads the way in affordability. Our unique Making Akron Possible Grant breaks down educational barriers, creates pathways for accessibility and now expands to all of Ohio's residents. We're excited to open our doors to families who may have previously thought a world-class education was out of reach."

In order to be eligible for the MAP grant, students must be first-time undergraduate students and Ohio residents. They must also be Pell-eligible, and have a family gross adjusted income of $85,000 or less based on the FAFSA. As it is a last-dollar award, it will apply to the student’s remaining tuition fees after all other scholarships, grants, and financial aid have been applied. It is renewable for up to four years provided that the student maintains eligibility.

The expansion to cover all Ohio residents is a decision that the school hopes will keep high-achieving students in the state after graduation to pursue high-demand jobs thanks to fewer barriers standing in the way of an education.

David Peterson, the university’s vice president for enrollment management, said, "This initiative is transformational for students and families across our state. For too many bright students, the fear of the cost of college creates a barrier before they even apply. Through the Making Akron Possible Grant, we are sending a clear, unequivocal message to every community in Ohio: A University of Akron education can be within your reach."

In order to apply for the Making Akron Possible grant, students must apply to the University of Akron and fill out the FAFSA.
