University of Rio Grande dedicates The Althoff Nature Complex

The Althoff Nature Complex has been named in honor of Dr. Donald Althoff, a professor emeritus and champion of student success.

The University of Rio Grande has dedicated its new Althoff Nature Complex in honor of Dr. Donald Althoff, a professor emeritus and champion of student success. The Althoff Nature Complex, which is expected to open in 2028, is a 72-acre restoration project that will provide the campus community with opportunities for education, research, and environmental stewardship.

According to an article on the University of Rio Grande’s website, Wayne Rossiter, Ph.D., who serves as an Associate Professor of Wildlife Conservation, was quoted as saying of the dedication, "This project represents what higher education can accomplish when teaching, research, conservation, and community engagement intersect. Naming this complex after Dr. Althoff is a fitting tribute to an individual whose impact on our institution has often occurred behind the scenes but has been profoundly meaningful to generations of students and colleagues."

The Althoff Nature Complex will contain 72 acres of native grasslands, wet meadows, experimental research plots, vernal pool wetlands, and the Granny Creek stream corridor. It will also have 2.5 miles of trails that will connect with the university’s existing trails and open up more areas for exploring, learning, and observing.

While the process of establishing the nature complex is ongoing, the school has already turned it into a living laboratory by allowing students and faculty members who are studying ecological restoration, water resources, wildlife habitat management, native plant communities, and environmental sustainability to utilize it for coursework, environmental workshops, field experiences, and new research initiatives. So far, the established areas include extensive grassland and wet meadow habitats and an initial vernal pool. In addition, 120 native plant species have been planted and seeded, which is creating a natural habitat for pollinators, birds, and amphibians.

The initiative has been funded mostly through private sources such as external grants and partnerships, which has allowed the university to undertake these efforts without relying on institutional resources.

The Althoff Nature Complex will be completed in 2028.
