Central Michigan University joins Lansing Promise

The Lansing Promise provides students in the Lansing School District with scholarships to attend universities and earn bachelor degrees, with Central Michigan University joining the program as an eligible university.

Central Michigan University has joined the Lansing Promise, a scholarship program that provides students in the Lansing School District with money to attend eligible universities to earn bachelor degrees. Sixteen students have already received Lansing Promise funding to attend Central Michigan University in the Fall 2026 semester, with more expected to join in the coming semesters.

According to an article on Central Michigan University's website, Jennifer DeHaemers, who serves as the university’s vice president for Student Recruitment and Retention, was quoted as saying of the partnership, “We are delighted to join the Lansing Promise in making degree attainment more accessible and affordable for students. The Lansing Promise organization has done such outstanding work to support students in our capital city, and we’re excited to partner with them to further that important mission. While CMU continues to offer one of the state’s lowest undergraduate tuition rates, we know that every bit of funding helps students and their families manage the cost of degree attainment. This partnership will help more students achieve their academic, personal and professional goals, and is truly a boon for our state. As an Opportunity University, we’re committed to helping students and their families find affordable pathways to attend CMU. CMU is known for surrounding students with support and helping them achieve academic and career success, and that begins with helping them identify scholarships and aid programs that can help reduce the cost of attendance.”

The Lansing Promise provides Lansing School District students with scholarships to attend Michigan universities and work toward bachelor degrees. Students who attend a Lansing School District high school and live within the district from 9th through 12th grade are eligible to receive up to $20,000 as a Lansing Promise Scholarship. Students who do so for at least one year are eligible to receive up to $10,000 as a Lansing Guarantee Scholarship. Students who earn either scholarship will also be eligible to receive a CMU Promise Scholars Award, which provides them with an additional $1,000 annually. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid in order to apply for the scholarships.

Jayme A. King, the executive director of Lansing Promise, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Central Michigan University as a Lansing Promise partner and to give Lansing students another outstanding option for pursuing a college degree. This partnership is about creating more opportunities and removing financial barriers so that students can choose the educational path that best fits their goals and will make a meaningful difference for Lansing students as they take the next step toward their future.”

Other universities and colleges that partner with the Lansing Promise include Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, Saginaw Valley State University, the University of Olivet, Davenport University, and Douglas J Institute.
