North Central Michigan College sets grand opening for Martin Jahn Technology Center

North Central Michigan College has set the grand opening ribbon-cutting celebration of its new Martin Jahn Technology Center for August 31, 2026 at 4:15pm. The public is invited to the event, which will commemorate a major milestone in the college’s Career and Technical Education Enhancement (CATEE) project. The Martin Jahn Technology Center facility will house the college’s advanced manufacturing, engineering technology, and skilled trades programs.

According to an article on North Central Michigan College’s website, college president David Roland Finley was quoted as saying of the new facility, "The Martin Jahn Technology Center represents an investment in our students, our employers, and the future of Northern Michigan. Because of the support we received from our elected officials, donors, and community partners, we are creating learning environments that prepare students for high-demand careers while strengthening the workforce that drives our regional economy."

The grand opening of the facility will allow attendees to take a tour of the center and listen to remarks from both college leaders and project partners. The building will officially open for students at the beginning of the Fall 2026 semester, replacing the 60-year-old Technology Building on campus. The Martin Jahn Technology Center will house programs like advanced manufacturing, engineering technology, robotics, welding, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, and other skilled trades programs.

Chelsea Platte, who serves as the vice president for advancement and executive director of the NCMC Foundation, said, "Every classroom, laboratory and collaborative space inside the Martin Jahn Technology Center represents an opportunity for another student to build a meaningful career close to home. We're excited to welcome our community inside and celebrate what this investment means for students, employers and the future of Northern Michigan."

The facility is one piece of the ongoing Career and Technical Education Enhancement (CATEE) project, a $22 million effort. The project began in 2023, when state Sen. John Damoose secured a $9.872 million appropriation from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. This kicked off construction of the Martin Jahn Technology Center and an expansion of the Health Education and Science Center. The project has also received $2 million in federal congressionally directed spending thanks to Congressman Jack Bergman and U.S. Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow.

The 7,200-square-foot expansion of the Health Education and Science Center will not be completed until later in the fall, but it will include classrooms, simulation laboratories, and clinical learning spaces.
