Northern Michigan University’s bachelor’s degree cybersecurity program was ranked fifth in the state, and its associate’s degree was ranked first.
Programs.com recently put out a ranking of Michigan’s cybersecurity education programs, which placed Northern Michigan University as one of the leaders in the state. It ranked Northern’s associate degree program atop Michigan’s colleges and universities, and placed its bachelor’s degree fifth in the state.
According to Programs.com, Northern Michigan University’s associate of business degree in information assurance and cyber defense can be classified within NUM’s AACSB-accredited College of Business while also including cybersecurity fundamentals through either a computer science track built around the C++ and Python coding languages, or a business track which covers management and accounting.
A quote on the topic from an article posted on Northern Michigan University’s website states that “Students train in a campus cyber lab with enterprise networking hardware and a private cloud environment for ethical hacking practice. The degree stacks directly into NMU's CAE-CD bachelor's in information assurance and cyber defense for students who want to continue their education.”
A number of qualities from the University’s bachelor’s degree program were noted in the program.com ranking, such as IT and Business Integration: The school’s curriculum merges business and cybersecurity as well as computer information systems class work, which prepares graduates to protect both systems as well as the organizational assets held by those systems; Upper Peninsula Cybersecurity Institute: On campus students can take advantage of the UPCI which assists with internship placements, partnerships with industry stakeholders, and high school and community outreach cybersecurity events; and First CAE-CD Designated Institution in the Upper Peninsula: NMU has been a pioneer in NSA-recognized cybersecurity education in Michigan’s UP, which has increased access to nationally credentialled training in a region that otherwise sees limited options for four year programs.
