The new endowed fund will support students who are pursuing a chemistry degree at the college.
Hiram College has a new endowed scholarship fund to support students who are pursuing a degree in chemistry. The Myers Family Scholarship Fund was established by alumnus Dr. Michael Myers and his family through the gift of approximately $200,000 in Eli Lilly and Company stock.
According to an article on Hiram College’s website, Shawn Dailey, who serves as the college’s vice president for development and alumni relations, was quoted as saying of the gift from the Myers family, “This extraordinary gift reflects the power of a Hiram education and the enduring connection our alumni feel to this institution. The Myers family is creating opportunities that will impact students for generations while strengthening one of Hiram’s most historic and respected academic programs.”
Dr. Michael Myers graduated from the college in 1983 with a degree in chemistry. His siblings, Dr. Ann Myers-Abraham and Dr. Brian Myers, also graduated from the college with chemistry degrees in 1988 and 1994, respectively. All three siblings benefited from the Paul Fall Scholarship during their time at Hiram College, and view the establishment of the Myers Family Scholarship Fund as a continuance of the legacy of the Paul Fall Scholarship.
Dr. Michael Myers said, “Hiram College opened doors that changed the trajectory of our lives. This scholarship is our family’s way of ensuring future students have access to the same kind of life-changing education, mentorship, and opportunity that we received here.”
Dr. Michael Myers is a member of Hiram College’s Board of Trustees, and previously served on the College’s Board of Visitors. He has also mentored students and been a leader in alumni engagement. Throughout his pharmaceutical industry career, Dr. Myers served as Associate Vice President at Lilly Research Labs and has been an inventor on more than 35 patents. His contributions have helped advance research and treatments in cancer, infectious disease, neuroscience, and cardiovascular medicine.
In order to be eligible for the Myers Family Scholarship, students must have a declared major in chemistry and demonstrate financial need.
