Baker College receives grants to provide summer camps and dual enrollment opportunities

Dr. LaTasha Ellis, the college’s Dean of Undergraduate Programs, is leading two initiatives that have received grant funding.

Baker College has received $213,000 in grant funding to support initiatives led by Dr. LaTasha Ellis, the college’s Dean of Undergraduate Programs. These initiatives will create more opportunities for middle school and high school students to attend summer camps that will earn them college credits, part of the college’s Running Start dual-enrollment program.

According to an article on Baker College’s website, Dr. Ellis is quoted as saying of the grant funding, “These grants allow Baker College to expand access to high-quality summer learning while removing barriers for students and families. Whether students are earning college credit or exploring new academic interests, these programs create meaningful pathways to confidence, curiosity, and future success.”

The grant funding comes from two sources. $63,360 has been awarded from the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) via its 2025–2026 Out-of-School Time (OST) Learning Grant. $150,000 was awarded from the BallmerGroup!’s Summer Discovery program grant. Each grant project will result in summer camps hosted by Baker College in Summer 2026.

The Out-of-School Time Learning Grant will serve 100 high school students as they participate in dual-enrollment summer camps at Baker College’s Owosso and Royal Oak campuses. These camps will help students earn six college credits while they are still in high school, giving them the opportunity to get a headstart on their college education. The camps will run from June 29 to August 9 and are open to all high school students from any district.

The Summer Discovery program grant will create six-week STEM-focused summer camps for 75 middle school students. These summer camps will focus on academic and career exploration within STEM, math, and English subjects. Participants will also be able to attend field trips and various enrichment activities. These camps are open to middle schoolers from all districts. On the Owosso campus, the Middle School Biology Camp will run from June 22 to June 26. On the Royal Oak Campus, the Middle School Summer Camp will run from June 22 to July 30.
