Dr. Alexandra Tamerius has been named the 2025 Volunteer of the Year by the American Chemical Society’s Indiana Chapter for her education work and community outreach.
The Indiana chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has named Alexandra Tamerius, Ph.D., as the 2025 Volunteer of the Year. Tamerius was recognized for her community outreach, mentorship of students, and commitment to science education. Tamerius is an assistant professor of chemistry in Marian University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
The American Chemical Society is one of the biggest scientific organizations in the world. Its mission is to advance chemistry and related fields through professional collaboration, research, and education. Dr. Tamerius’ work has had an impressive impact on not only her students, but also the community of Indianapolis more broadly.
Dr. Tamerius is part of many chemistry related outreach initiatives, both in leadership as well as support roles. Her work includes professional networking opportunities that link industry partners with Marian University students, career exploration events, and even science engagement programs for children. The work she is doing is helping to expand Marian’s mission of service beyond campus, while also enriching the classroom learning experience for her students.
In an article recently posted on Marian University’s website, Dr. Tamerius reflected on the recognition and the collaboration it took to get to where she is now. She is quoted as saying, “This award reflects the collective effort of our students, colleagues, and university leadership. Outreach and career engagement help students apply what they are learning while giving back to the community, an experience that shaped my own journey into chemistry and continues to inspire my work today.”
Daniel J. Elsener, the President of Marian University, was also quoted about Dr. Tamerius’ accolades, saying, “The outreach in Indianapolis is all evidence of outstanding teaching, formation, and service. We are enormously proud of Dr. Tamerius and the entire chemistry faculty for their mentorship, professional connections, and commitment to the community.”
The ACS Indiana selection committee praised Dr. Tamerius’ work with students and the community in its award announcement: “Her efforts inspire thousands across the Indianapolis area to embrace the exciting world of science. She consistently goes above and beyond for her students while embodying the Franciscan values of Marian University through her service.”
Dr. Tamerius’ recognition as Volunteer of the Year by the Indiana ACS is part of the university’s ongoing commitment to preparing students to lead in their communities with purpose, compassion, and knowledge; engaging the community; and experiential learning.
In the past few years, Dr. Tamerius has led three outreach events in collaboration with Dr. Joyce Horton. The two have received recognition on a national level from the American Chemical Society at its yearly Chemluminary award ceremony.
