The grant will support healthcare career training at the university through the funding of equipment purchases.
Eastern Kentucky University has received a $110,000 grant from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education to support its healthcare workforce training programs. The grant funds will purchase training equipment for the university’s College of Health Sciences.
According to an article on Eastern Kentucky University’s website, university president David McFaddin is quoted as saying of the grant funding, “EKU is grateful for this investment in our programs to strengthen Kentucky’s healthcare workforce. This funding allows us to place the latest tools directly into the learning environment and give students real‑world experience in healthcare settings.”
The university's College of Health Sciences includes programs like nursing, healthcare administration, medical laboratory science, exercise and sport science, and occupational therapy, among others. This grant will benefit the Exercise and Sport Science program, the Center for Retention, Progression, and Graduation, the Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy program, and the Medical Laboratory Science program.
The grant funding will purchase a body composition analyzer, a stair climber, weight storage, anatomical models of the brain, spine, arm, and leg muscles, splint pans, a refrigerator, stove, and hood in the Activity of Daily Living Lab, a clinical chemistry analyzer, and hematology equipment.
Dr. Dana Howell, who serves as an Associate Dean and Foundation Professor in the College of Health Sciences, said of the benefits this new equipment will provide, “Students can use the equipment to apply what they have learned in clinical scenarios, helping to build their knowledge, reasoning skills and confidence. This will help ensure students are prepared for their clinical and field experiences.”
The university is currently working toward expanding its healthcare training opportunities. One such measure the university is undertaking is the proposal of a new College of Osteopathic Medicine, which would provide students with even more healthcare pathways.
